THE VIDEO showing the brutal
beating of a schoolgirl in class has not aroused any sympathy for the victim.
Instead of fellow pupils
feeling sorry for the girl who was beaten by another schoolgirl, the video is
being used to make a laughing stock of the 17-year old girl from Lepelle Nkumi
in Limpopo.
The attack happened on 15
January as schools opened for the year.
But until today, no action
has been taken.
The girl’s
family is not happy and is accusing the education department of failing to act
since they reported the case over a month ago. A case of assault was opened
with local police. As the attacker is a minor, the case was transferred to
social workers.
It is alleged the fight
started over use of the words “school kids”.
Speaking to Daily Sun, family
member Lethaba Mallela said: “The girl was badly
assaulted and the school did nothing about it. They never phoned us or wrote us
a letter. We only found out what happened when we saw the video. They haven’t
apologised or told us what steps were taken against this bully.”
Mallela said they’d
heard this was not the first time the pupil had been involved in such an
incident.
“Yet she gets away with it while our kids are
humiliated in public,” said Mallela.
Phuti Seloba of Limpopo’s
Education Department said they condemn violence at school and apologise to the
family for the pain caused. “We regret that there
are people who find pleasure in circulating this video,”
said Seloba.
Seloba said the department
has not received any complaint regarding the matter.
“We advise the family to report it officially so the
department can attend to it,” said Seloba.
