Governor Umaru Al-Makura of
Nasarawa State has commended the people of the state for the peaceful conduct
of Saturday’s local government election in the state.
Mr. Al-Makura spoke on
Saturday, after casting his vote at the Lungun Wambai polling unit of Gayan
Ward in Lafia, at about 3.30 p.m.
He said that reports reaching
him indicated that the election was generally peaceful across the state.
The governor urged the people
to sustain the peace even after the polls, adding that all grievances that
might arise from the polls should be channeled through the appropriate
quarters.
“I know that exercises like this are bound to have
certain challenges; however, I urge the people to be law-abiding and respect
the rule of law in airing their grievances,” he said.
On the delay in the arrival
of materials to polling units, Mr. Al-Makura said that although such hiccups
could not be ruled out, it did not mar the election.
“At the end of the day, the election will be adjudged
credible, free and fair, and reflecting the wishes of the people,”
he said.
Voting started late in most
polling units in Lafia, with accreditation and voting going on simultaneously
Meanwhile there was large
turn-out of voters in Keffi Local Government Area, while accreditation started
at 10 a.m.
A presiding officer at
Baptist Primary School polling unit of Goriya Ward Keffi, Malam Gana said that
the accreditation was peaceful.
“You can see by yourself that the accreditation is
peaceful, look at how people lined up without any form of rancour, and we will
stop the election once it is 4 p.m.,” the official said.
